Kindergarten (JK and SK, class size 16)

The Glenburnie Approach to Kindergarten

Our Kindergarten curriculum is a well-balanced, enriched, child-centred program that integrates discovery-based learning and traditional teaching in a caring and nurturing environment. Our approach makes the acquisition of reading, writing, reasoning and mathematical skills a truly exciting and active learning experience. The Glenburnie experience is multi-dimensional in the sense that it also provides guidance and many opportunities for students to develop intellectually, socially and emotionally.

Kindergarten Curriculum Details

Kindergarten students are at a wonderful stage in their development where exploration and discovery in our child-centred classrooms are vital to the success of their learning experience. Students at this stage require a curriculum rich in variety and stimulation incorporating hands-on learning experiences which meets and often exceeds Ministry of Education guidelines. Teacher student ratios for JK and SK are 1:16. Specialty teachers are incorporated throughout the daily schedule who provide instruction in Music, Art, Computer Technology, French, Physical Education, Musical Movement, and Library.

Utilizing curriculum concepts and skills, students are provided with continuous opportunities for inquiry, investigation and experimentation. They use their new knowledge in math, reading and story writing to organize, record and make predictions. The outcomes of student activities include multiple opportunities to develop their 21st Century skills.

Knowledge and skills learned from the Music, Visual Arts, and Computer subject specific classes are often integrated into each child’s grade level’s curriculum. For more information, please visit our Student Life pages.
